San Mamés is right in the city, close to the estuary and to the Bilbao you came to discover. Walk towards the stadium and, the closer you get, the more red and white you see around you.
Hours before kick-off, the atmosphere is already building in the streets. The match doesn't interrupt your day in Bilbao. It becomes part of it.
After the stadium, head back towards Casco Viejo for pintxos and an evening that doesn't need to be planned down to the last minute.
And when you get home, you'll talk about both the match and the city. In Bilbao, you don't have to choose.

The old San Mamés was Athletic's home for a century. In 2013, it gave way to the new stadium, built virtually on the same site — and passed on its nickname with it: La Catedral.
Its semi-transparent façade and steep stands were designed to bring spectators close to the pitch. On matchday, the stadium doesn't feel separate from the city. It belongs to it.
And Bilbao doesn't end at the stadium gates.

I recently had the great experience of attending one of Liverpool FC's games at Anfield, against another FA great, Arsenal. And what an event it was! I got goosebumps several times. I'm glad that, with the help of Mrs Nicolescu, we were able to choose the right package for the game — tickets in the Brodies Sports Bar area — as well as a very well-located hotel, Ropewalks, within a 10–20 minute walk of Liverpool's main attractions and other places of interest we discovered while there.
