Zandvoort doesn't feel like many of Formula 1's modern circuits. The track winds through the sand dunes along the North Sea coast, rising, falling and changing direction with a rhythm that retains something of the character of racing circuits from another era.
Circuit Zandvoort opened in 1948, and Formula 1 arrived here in 1952. Today's track measures 4.259 kilometres and has 14 corners, but the numbers tell only part of the story. It's a narrow, fast and undulating circuit where the natural landscape becomes part of every lap.
And Zandvoort has something rare in modern Formula 1: heavily banked corners. Hugenholtzbocht and, above all, the final corner — Arie Luyendijkbocht — use banking to change the way the cars can attack the track. The final corner reaches 18 degrees of banking, launching the cars out of the turn and onto the start-finish straight.
Beyond the circuit are the dunes, the beach and the North Sea. Amsterdam is close enough for the weekend to continue in the city, but Zandvoort doesn't need it to define its identity.
Here, Formula 1 races through the dunes. And beyond them, the sea begins.
