In Monaco, Formula 1 literally races through the heart of the Principality. In Monaco, Formula 1 doesn't need a circuit built outside the city. The city becomes the circuit. The streets of Monte Carlo, the harbour, Casino Square and the corners running between the buildings create one of the most recognisable tracks in motorsport.
The Monaco Grand Prix existed before the Formula 1 World Championship itself. The first race was held in 1929, and in 1950 Monaco formed part of the championship's inaugural season. Since then, its place in Formula 1 history has become inseparable from the image of the sport.
The circuit measures just 3.337 kilometres, but its 78 laps demand a level of precision that is difficult to compare with anywhere else. The barriers are close, the corners arrive one after another and there is almost no room to correct a mistake. Here, speed alone isn't enough. Car placement, concentration and the confidence to pass within centimetres of the barriers again and again all matter.
And around the circuit, Monaco continues: yachts in the harbour, terraces, the buildings of Monte Carlo and the Mediterranean. It is one of the few Grands Prix where the boundary between race and destination almost disappears. In Monaco, you don't watch Formula 1 from a distance. For one weekend, you're right in the middle of it.
