Baku is nothing like a circuit built outside the city. Formula 1 runs straight through it. It passes between buildings, climbs towards the Old City, threads past the medieval walls of Icheri Sheher and then suddenly opens onto the boulevards along the Caspian Sea. In a single lap, the scenery changes almost as quickly as the cars.
The Baku City Circuit entered Formula 1 in 2016. At 6.003 kilometres, it has one of the combinations that makes it instantly recognisable: narrow, technical sections through the historic centre followed by a stretch of approximately 2.2 kilometres that carries the cars back towards the start line. Teams have to reconcile two things that don't naturally belong together — the grip required between the walls and the speed demanded by the long straight.
Around the Old City, the circuit narrows and mistakes leave very little room for correction. Minutes later, the same car is launched along the Caspian shoreline. That contrast defines Baku: narrow and wide, old and modern, control and speed.
And perhaps this is what makes it different from many other Formula 1 weekends: the race doesn't happen next to the destination. The destination is part of the race. When the engines stop, you're still in Baku — with the Old City, the Caspian promenade and a city worth discovering beyond the circuit barriers.
