The Temple of Speed. For more than a century.
Autodromo Nazionale Monza doesn't sit on the edge of a city. It sits inside a park. Old avenues, deep shade, silence — until the first engine hits the straight. Italians call it il Tempio della Velocità — the Temple of Speed. At Monza, the name speaks for itself.
Built in 1922 in just 110 days, Monza was the third purpose-built motor racing circuit in the world, after Brooklands and Indianapolis. It has been part of the Formula 1 World Championship since its inaugural season in 1950. Through the trees, the banked curves of the old oval can still be seen — traces of another era of racing preserved within the circuit.
Its 5.793 kilometres are built around one idea. The cars spend almost eighty per cent of the lap at full throttle. Speed builds along the 1.1-kilometre main straight before the brutal braking zone for Variante del Rettifilo, dropping from around 350 to 70 km/h. You don't need to be an expert to understand speed from the grandstand. You can hear it.
And then there is everything that has nothing to do with asphalt. At Monza, the crowd doesn't simply watch the race. It plays at home. The red in the grandstands isn't decoration; it is belonging. If you've ever wondered what tifosi really means, this is where you find out without having to ask.
The circuit is near Milan, and the experience doesn't have to end when you leave the park. Monza can be the centre of your weekend without being the whole journey. You decide how much of Italy you want to build around the race.
